Ljudski Vrt Stadium stands on Mladinska Street, close to Maribor's city centre. Its name recalls a former public park that once served as a gathering place. The present stadium was built in 1961, while its most distinctive feature is the western grandstand with a sweeping concrete arch, completed in 1962. The unusual structure is protected as part of the city's architectural heritage.
The stadium is home to NK Maribor, Slovenia's most successful football club by national league titles. The club's purple colours and its Viole supporters are closely associated with the ground. Ljudski Vrt has hosted European club competitions and Slovenian national team matches. A defining moment was Slovenia's victory over Russia in 2009, securing qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Several renovations have shaped the stadium, including the restoration of the historic western stand in 2021, now named after former captain Marcos Tavares. Beyond football, the venue hosts sporting and other events, including the opening ceremony of the 2023 European Youth Olympic Festival.
