The Jewish Tower (Židovski stolp) stands on Jewish Square in Maribor's Lent district, beside the former synagogue and a surviving section of the city walls. Built in the second half of the 15th century, it protected the south-eastern edge of the medieval town. The surrounding Jewish quarter was home to a community that played an important role in Maribor's trade and economy.
The tower was once used for the city's defence and housed a town watch commander. Its stone walls, small openings and connection to the fortifications recall the defensive structures that once surrounded the old town. With the synagogue nearby and views towards the Drava River, the tower remains part of the historic setting of Jewish Square.
Today the building houses Stolp Photo Gallery, run by Maribor Photo Club. The club took over the premises in 1979 and opened the gallery in 1989. Across three floors, exhibitions show photographs by Slovenian and international artists, alongside a collection and photographic archive. The tower brings medieval architecture and contemporary photography together.
