The Maribor Post Office is a monumental Neo-Renaissance building at the corner of Slomšek Square and Poštna Street. Built between 1892 and 1894, it was designed by Viennese architect Friedrich Setz, who created numerous post office buildings across the Habsburg monarchy. A round corner tower, richly decorated façades and a clock above the central section distinguish the palace.
The site was once occupied by a medieval town hospital, founded in 1348, and the Church of the Holy Spirit. During the early 19th century, the former church served for a time as a theatre. A girls’ school later operated in the complex. The earlier buildings were demolished to make way for the post office, while a memorial plaque recalls the former hospital.
Between 1894 and 1903, Herman Potočnik Noordung, later a pioneer of space engineering, spent part of his childhood in the building. It still serves postal functions and houses the headquarters of Pošta Slovenije. Alongside the cathedral, university rectorate and theatre, it helps define the historic character of Slomšek Square.
