The last surviving tower of the northern city walls recalls Maribor’s defences and brewing history.

Čeligi Tower stands on Gregorčičeva Street in central Maribor, surrounded by newer buildings along the northern edge of the former city walls. Built between 1460 and 1465, it formed part of the town's defences. It is the only surviving tower of the northern fortifications, once protecting medieval Maribor alongside other defensive structures.

Its distinctive features include a square plan, tall stone walls and a steep pyramidal roof. Beside it, a section of the original city wall survives, with traces of former wooden defensive walkways. Because the structure underwent relatively few major alterations, it retains important features of medieval military architecture. The tower was also known by names including Black Tower and Gambrinus Tower.

Its present name comes from the Tscheligi family of Maribor brewers, associated with the building's later history. Nearby once stood the Gambrinus restaurant, named after a legendary figure linked to brewing. The tower was restored between 2020 and 2022 to protect the historic structure. Regular museum visits inside have not been confirmed.
