Photography Museum Maribor, located at 19 Koroška Street, explores the development of photography and photographic technology from the late 19th to the late 20th century. Its permanent exhibition centres on the Avgust and Maria Bohanec Collection, comprising 1,645 objects, including more than 1,100 cameras, film cameras and projectors. Light meters, flashes, lenses and other equipment illustrate how photographic techniques evolved.
The collection was assembled by Avgust and Maria Bohanec, who lived in the United States. Born in Mala Nedelja, Avgust Bohanec became a successful dealer and repair specialist for Leica photographic equipment. In 1988, the couple donated their collection to Maribor, making it available for public display.
The museum also features cameras used by photographers from Maribor and elsewhere in Slovenia. Its gallery presents temporary exhibitions of historic, documentary and artistic photography. Together, the equipment and photographic works connect technological developments with the people, places and everyday moments captured through the lens.
