Pobrežje Cemetery in eastern Maribor is the city's oldest surviving cemetery still in use. Its history began in 1879, when the municipality sought new burial grounds. Today it incorporates the former municipal, Magdalena and Franciscan cemeteries. Their chapels and monuments reflect changing burial traditions and funerary art across generations.
Among its architectural highlights are Czeike's brick arcades, built in 1930 above family tombs. A Neo-Gothic chapel, a Neo-Baroque funeral chapel and historic gravestones add to the site's character. People who helped shape Maribor are buried here, including General Rudolf Maister and Olympic champion Leon Štukelj.
The Park of Remembrance, with tree-lined paths and benches, offers space for reflection and an insight into the city's history. Military graves commemorate the two world wars. The cemetery is part of the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE) and the European Cemeteries Route.
