A statue of the Roman god of wine sits on a barrel above a street corner in central Maribor.

Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, drinking and merriment, appears on the corner of the former Hotel Orel on Slovenska Street in central Maribor. The figure sits on a wine barrel in a corner niche beneath a decorative canopy. It is one of the architectural details found on the façades of the city's historic buildings.

The niche originally contained a statue of the Virgin Mary, which was stolen. It was later replaced by Bacchus, a figure associated with wine and celebration. The change from a religious image to a Roman deity gives this small architectural feature an unusual story, reflecting different chapters in the building's history.

The statue belongs to the former Hotel Orel, whose hospitality history reaches back to the 18th century. Originally a coaching inn known as the Black Eagle, it later developed into a hotel and a gathering place in Maribor. Bacchus also evokes the city's long tradition of wine and hospitality, adding a distinctive detail to its historic streetscape.
