Foundations of a Roman country estate reveal homes, farm buildings and a medieval burial ground.

The Roman Settlement – Villa Rustica lies in Radvanje, beside Pekrski Stream on the south-western edge of Maribor. The archaeological site preserves the remains of a Roman rural estate occupied from the late 2nd to the 4th century AD. Such estates combined residential buildings with agricultural activities, particularly crop cultivation and livestock farming. The settlement formed part of a wider network of Roman estates along the Drava.

Excavations uncovered two residential buildings and a separate agricultural area with stables, animal shelters and storage spaces. The complex measured approximately 98 by 90 metres and was enclosed by a wall with two towers. Archaeologists identified three building phases, showing how the estate changed and developed over time.

A distinctive discovery is a group of 28 graves dating to the 11th century, found among the ruins of the Roman buildings. They reveal that the site was used again in the Middle Ages, long after the Roman estate had been abandoned. Today, the preserved foundations are presented outdoors, connecting two different periods in the history of the Maribor area.
