Maribor Stories: Under the Bridge recalls people who sought shelter beneath the stone arches of the Old Bridge in Lent. The bridge officially opened on 23 August 1913 in the presence of Archduke Friedrich. It improved the road connection between Vienna and Trieste, replacing the old wooden crossing and the steep approach along Dravska Street.
While the bridge made travel easier, its stone arches became a refuge for people without homes. Entire families sometimes lived there with their belongings. On 22 August 1927, the newspaper Mariborski večernik Jutra reported on a family spending a second month beneath the bridge. Thunderstorms sent water rushing past their furniture and soaked them even as they sheltered against the walls.
The report drew attention to the hardship and health risks of living outdoors, asking readers to consider the families' circumstances. The bridge was destroyed in April 1941 by the retreating Yugoslav army and later rebuilt. The story preserves the memory of residents whose struggles were part of Maribor's history, although often overlooked.
