In 1988, around 950 residents formed a human chain to pass books to the new university library.

Maribor Stories: The Human Chain recalls the move of the University of Maribor Library to its new building on Gospejna Street. Plans for a new library began in the 1960s, but funding was not approved until 1986. The building, between Orožnova, Gospejna and Miklošičeva streets, was completed two years later, replacing the former premises at 1 Prešernova Street.

On 4 October 1988, around 950 Maribor residents formed a human chain between the two buildings. They passed approximately 1,500 books from hand to hand, symbolically connecting the old and new library. The idea came from the library's director, Dr Bruno Hartman, who wanted to turn the relocation into an event involving the wider community.

The story is also remembered through the Book Exchange – Human Chain bench outside the university library. Designed by Nejc Brezovšek, it resembles an open book and provides space for exchanging books. The story connects the city's educational history with an example of community participation.
