Maribor Stories is a collection of 20 accounts of people, events and places that have shaped life in the city, written by Vid Kmetič. Each story is linked to a location, from Lent and the Old Bridge to Studenci, Ljudski Vrt and the streets of the old town. An accompanying map connects the stories with places across Maribor.
The collection includes Nikola Tesla’s stay and expulsion, the engineering feat that saved the Water Tower from the rising Drava, an April Fools’ treasure hoax and the human chain formed when the University of Maribor Library moved. Other accounts follow the city’s first women footballers, former tower watchkeepers and people rarely featured in conventional histories.
Combining documented events, newspaper reports and local lore, the stories range from amusing anecdotes to accounts of war, poverty and social change. Together they show how Maribor developed and how its residents experienced everyday life across different periods.
