Spomin (Memory) stands in the courtyard of the Karantena building on Pobreška Road in Maribor. The fourteenth art bench in the Stories of Benches and People project was designed by architecture students Maja Žalik, Tjaša Pauko, Lucija Cvejan and Sara Milič, mentored by Nande Korpnik. Unveiled on 21 May 2019, it emerged from the Second Chance – Waking Up Sleeping Giants urban regeneration project.
The bench reflects the history of an Austrian prison established here in 1889, later used as Maribor's correctional institution until 1963. Its base of reused metal pipes in different diameters represents the difficult past of the neighbouring building. The light-coloured, smooth concrete seat expresses the possibility of renewal and a different future for the site.
Set beside the former prison, the bench connects memory and architectural transformation. It offers a place to sit while inviting reflection on how historic urban spaces can take on new purposes.
