The Museum of Madness is housed in Cmurek Castle in Trate, near the Slovenian-Austrian border. Dating back to the 12th century, the castle later housed an institution for people with mental and neurological conditions, which closed in 2004. Today, the museum explores the castle's history and the experiences of those who lived and worked there.
Its central exhibition, Neskončne Trate norosti, uses personal accounts from former residents, staff and relatives to examine mental health, human rights and community inclusion. Other exhibitions explore the architectural history of Cmurek Castle, local heritage and the natural environment of the River Mura.
The museum is also a place for research, art and public dialogue. It organises exhibitions, guided tours, discussions and cultural events while encouraging greater understanding of people who have experienced mental health difficulties. Guided visits introduce different chapters of the castle's history and its changing role in the community.
