Kalvarija is a 375-metre hill above Maribor's City Park. Vineyards cover its southern slopes, while woodland grows on the northern side. The famous 455 stone steps offer a direct route to the summit and are popular with walkers and fitness enthusiasts. Other paths lead up from City Park. Viewpoints on the slopes look towards Maribor, Pohorje, the Drava Plain and the Slovenske gorice hills.
At the summit stands the Church of St Barbara and St Rosalia, built between 1681 and 1683 by the townspeople in gratitude for the end of a plague outbreak. A pilgrimage route with chapels was established in 1683. This Way of the Cross gave Kalvarija its name, linking religious history with the vineyards that have long shaped the hillside.
Kalvarija belongs to the protected wider City Park area. The approximately five-kilometre Piramida–Kalvarija Nature Trail connects it with Mestni Vrh and Piramida. Along the route, shaded woodland alternates with open vineyard slopes, while information boards introduce the natural environment on the edge of the city.
