Pohorje, wine-growing towns and Maribor
This two-day programme combines Pohorje’s natural surroundings, local food, wine tastings and Maribor’s cultural heritage. The route leads from Rogla through Skomarje and Slovenske Konjice to Maribor, finishing at Planica nad Framom.
Day 1: Rogla–Skomarje–Slovenske Konjice–Maribor
The programme begins with a morning arrival at Rogla, 1,517 metres above sea level. A visit to the Pohorje Treetop Walk introduces the forest and its importance while offering views across the landscape. The approximately one-kilometre route leads to a 37-metre observation tower. A descent on the slide is also possible.
Refreshments follow at the Arbajter Tourist Farm in Skomarje, with an introduction to its deer and fallow deer farm. The planned meal includes cured meat specialities of the Okusi Rogle brand and the local “vlivani štrudl” pastry. Products can be purchased.
The route continues through Zreče to Slovenske Konjice and the Zlati grič wine cellar in Škalce. A guided cellar tour is followed by a tasting of Konjiška penina sparkling wine and three wine samples, accompanied by bread and cheese from a local producer.
In the evening, participants arrive at Hotel Maribor, settle into their rooms and take a walk through the city. Dinner at the Rožmarin restaurant with local wines is followed by an overnight stay.
Day 2: Maribor–Mariborsko Pohorje–Planica nad Framom
After breakfast, a guided tour of Maribor’s historic centre begins in the City Park. The route crosses Trg generala Maistra to “Ezl ek”, the Astoria café on Grajski trg, for a coffee stop.
The walk continues past the Franciscan church, across Trg Leona Štuklja to Slomškov trg and the Cathedral of St John the Baptist. It follows Poštna ulica to Glavni trg with its Plague Monument, then Židovski trg with the Jewish Tower and synagogue.
The city tour finishes on Lent beside the World’s Oldest Grapevine, of the žametovka or modra kavčina variety, recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. A tasting of wines from Slovenian Styria is planned at the Old Vine House.
Lunch at the Mlada Lipa guesthouse follows on the way to the Pohorje cable car. The programme then includes a cable car ride to Mariborsko Pohorje, views over Maribor and its surroundings, and time to walk along nearby paths.
After returning to the valley, the route continues to the Pri Baronu tourist and organic farm at Planica nad Framom. The introduction covers its farming methods, permaculture and herb gardens, home-produced drinks, farm animals and Pohorje Beef offering. Dinner consists of a plate of house specialities. The programme ends in the evening.
