Three experiences of mining heritage and wine culture

Unique Trio combines a culinary experience in Velenje’s mine, guided kayaking in the Peca Underground and a wine route to the World’s Oldest Grapevine in Maribor. The programme brings together industrial heritage, underground exploration and the stories of Styrian winemakers.

1. Velenje Underground — dining 160 metres below ground

The culinary experience takes place at the Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia in Velenje. A descent in the mining lift leads into the former working environment of miners, with a dining area 160 metres below the surface.

The programme presentation combines dishes prepared by the Vila Herberstein team with the mining setting and musical entertainment. The experience shows how a former industrial space can be connected with gastronomy.

2. Kayaking adventure in the Peca Underground

The guided exploration of the former mine in Mežica includes paddling through underground lakes, flooded tunnels and excavations almost 700 metres below the surface.

The area’s mining history spans more than three centuries. Approximately 19 million tonnes of lead and zinc ore were extracted, and more than 1,000 kilometres of tunnels were excavated. Ore production ended in 1994, after which the lower sections flooded.

Advance booking is required for the kayaking experience. The published participation requirements are a minimum age of 10 years and a minimum height of 150 cm. Each kayaking group can have a maximum of 10 people. This limit applies to the kayaking tour rather than the entire Unique Trio package.

3. Wine stories leading to the World’s Oldest Grapevine

Accompanied by a sommelier, the wine experience introduces winemakers from the Štajerska Slovenija wine-growing district. It connects wine cellars, wine catacombs and the World’s Oldest Grapevine on Maribor’s Lent waterfront.

The route leads from the heart-shaped road among the vineyards via the Vinag cellar to the World’s Oldest Grapevine. The focus is on local wine stories, winemaking heritage and Styrian wines.
