Underground heritage in Velenje, Mežica and Maribor

The Underground Trio is a one-day programme of three guided underground visits. It connects Velenje’s coal-mining heritage, the former lead and zinc mine in Mežica and the Tezno production tunnels in Maribor.

Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia in Velenje

The underground collection, 160 metres below the surface, presents miners’ lives and work and the development of coal mining. Scenes, exhibits and audiovisual interpretation introduce working conditions and mining machinery.

The museum’s current presentation lists 18 scenes from miners’ lives and work. The original trip programme allows approximately an hour and a half for this section and includes a final ride on the underground railway.

Peca Underground in Mežica

Participants receive mining equipment and travel on a mining train through the 3.5-kilometre Glančnik tunnel. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes and leads to the Moring area inside the mountain, beneath Veliki vrh.

A guided visit follows, using exhibits to explain mining history and work in the mine. The group returns to the starting point by mining train. A miner’s snack can be arranged on request.

Tezno tunnels in Maribor

The underground production tunnels were built in 1943 in response to the threat of Allied air raids. A network covering 8,512 m² was created 15 metres below ground to allow production to continue during attacks on the factory.

The guided visit includes a short photo exhibition and the history of wartime production tunnels, the TAM factory and the Tezno business and production zone. The stated duration of this section is approximately an hour and a half.
