Above Maribor, Pohorje combines forest trails, waterfalls, peat bogs and open mountain landscapes.

Pohorje rises above Maribor and stretches west towards the Koroška region. Its forested slopes, open highland grasslands and rounded summits include Črni vrh (1,543 m), the mountain range's highest point. Hiking, mountain biking and winter sports are part of its year-round appeal. From Maribor, the Pohorje cable car links the city outskirts with trails and views across the Drava Valley.

The area's most distinctive natural sites include Lovrenška Lakes, Ribniško Lake and Črno Lake, set among sensitive peat bogs. Streams cut through the woodland and form waterfalls, including Veliki and Mali Šumik. An old-growth forest stand survives in the Lobnica valley. Together, these forests and wetlands provide habitats for a wide range of plants and wildlife.

In 2024, the Pohorje Regional Park was established to protect 52 square kilometres of the mountain range's upper reaches, rather than Pohorje as a whole. Marked trails link woods, mountain grasslands and huts. The landscape offers many ways to explore on foot, while its protected habitats call for care and staying on designated paths.
