Lake Pernica lies near Pernica, northeast of Maribor, in the Pesnica River valley. Created in 1967, it serves as a reservoir for flood protection and water storage during dry periods. It consists of two bodies of water separated by a narrow embankment carrying a road. Meadows, fields and vineyard-covered slopes of Slovenske gorice surround the lake.
The lake is an important habitat for waterbirds and a stopover for some rare migratory species. Its waters, shoreline vegetation and surrounding open countryside provide opportunities for birdwatching. Lake Pernica also has a history of fish farming and recreational fishing, which is subject to permits and the current fishing regulations.
The Pernica–Jakobski Dol cycling route, a circular ride of approximately 33 kilometres, passes the lake and continues through Pernica, Vukovski Dol and the surrounding villages. Views across the water towards farms and vineyards reveal the character of the Pesnica Valley. The lake combines wetland wildlife, rural scenery and cycling close to Maribor.
