The Three Ponds lie at the northern edge of Maribor City Park, where landscaped paths lead towards wooded hillsides. The ponds once served as water reservoirs for the city's defensive moat. Today they form a popular walking area a short distance from the historic centre. The ponds became part of the wider City Park landscape in the late 19th century.
Open water, mature trees and waterside vegetation shape the setting. The ponds and nearby woodland also provide habitats for amphibians and other wildlife. Surveys have recorded common toads, brown frogs and grass snakes, while highlighting the impact of invasive non-native species. The ponds are therefore both a place for recreation and an environment where protecting wildlife matters.
A promenade through City Park leads towards the ponds, passing established trees and lawns. Paths continue beside the water into quieter, more wooded sections. Despite the name Three Ponds, the wider area actually contains five ponds, a lesser-known detail of Maribor's landscape. The walk brings together city history, park design and the natural life of the water's edge.
