A natural Drava island combines rich wildlife with Maribor's historic outdoor swimming complex.

Maribor Island is Slovenia’s largest natural river island, set in the Drava River on the western edge of Maribor. It formed as river sediments accumulated beyond former rapids, where the Drava Valley opens onto the Drava Plain. Recognised for its exceptional biodiversity, it was first protected in 1951 and is now designated a natural monument.

More than 330 plant species have been recorded on the island, where Alpine and sub-Pannonian vegetation meet. Around 70 bird species have also been observed, including many that breed here. A nature trail around the island introduces its plant and animal life and the distinctive habitats created by the river.

The island is also part of Maribor’s social history. In 1930, the city opened an outdoor swimming complex here, now protected as cultural heritage and used for summer recreation. Before that, it was known as Felber Island after its former owners. Maribor Island brings together the Drava’s natural heritage, the history of public bathing and woodland walks in one place.
