Plant collections, giant sequoias and prehistoric burial mounds connect nature with history.

The University of Maribor Botanical Garden in Pivola lies at the foot of the Pohorje Mountains, near Hoče. It brings together native and exotic plant collections, botanical research and walking paths. One of its distinguishing features is a historic collection of exotic trees planted in the late 19th century, including two giant sequoias and a giant arborvitae that still grow here today.

The garden's plant collections introduce different species and their importance to people and the environment. It also plays a role in plant conservation, research and education. Visitors can explore independently or join guided tours, follow educational trails and see exhibitions linking botany with other fields of knowledge.

A distinctive feature is the archaeological park with prehistoric burial mounds associated with the Iron Age settlement of Poštela. An educational trail leads past ancient burial sites, while an exhibition explores life in the area more than 2,600 years ago. The garden brings together botanical heritage, archaeology and the history of the Pohorje region.
