Lake Komarnik lies about two kilometres west of Lenart in the Slovenske gorice hills, beside the Črni les forest. Its history dates to the 16th century, when the owners of nearby Hrastovec Castle used it for fish farming. In the 1960s, it was converted into a floodwater reservoir. Today it provides important habitat for waterbirds and other species affected by the loss of wetlands in the Pesnica Valley.
The Franckova Trail, a nature walk of around 2.5 kilometres, circles the lake, with information boards and two birdwatching hides. Breeding birds include little grebes, great crested grebes, mallards and mute swans. Migrating ducks and waders can also be spotted. The wetland vegetation includes water caltrop, yellow water lily and floating marshwort, while around 30 dragonfly species have been recorded in the area.
Views across the lake extend towards Hrastovec Castle. The nearby Agata Trail recalls the local story of Agata and Friderik Herberstein. Komarnik combines birdwatching and an easy waterside walk with a connection to the history of the Slovenske gorice region.
