Meranovo Estate lies on the wine-growing slopes of Pohorje above Limbuš and is considered the birthplace of modern viticulture in Slovenian Styria. In 1822, Archduke Johann of Austria planted noble grape varieties here, helping introduce modern winemaking to the region. Today, the University of Maribor's Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences continues this legacy through wine production, research and education.
One of the estate's distinctive features is a collection of more than 400 grape varieties maintained for research and conservation. Its own wines are presented during tastings in a cellar nearly 200 years old. Guided visits also include the hybrid museum exhibition Archduke Johann, Father of Meranovo, exploring the history of regional viticulture.
At the Meranovo restaurant, estate-produced wines are served alongside local cold cuts, cheeses, traditional pastries and other Styrian dishes. The hillside setting also offers a close connection to Pohorje's vineyard landscape. History, wine culture and regional food come together at this working wine estate.
