Maribor Aquarium and Terrarium stands on the edge of Maribor City Park, in a building that once housed the Park Café. Opened in 1953, it introduces aquatic and terrestrial habitats from different parts of the world. Today, its aquarium and terrarium sections house more than 170 animal species.
The aquarium presents river, lake and marine environments. Its collection of more than 120 fish species includes tropical freshwater fish, piranhas and marine life from the Adriatic Sea. The terrarium features reptiles, amphibians and insects, including snakes, crocodiles and turtles.
Beyond displaying animals, the centre focuses on biodiversity and environmental education. Its activities encourage a better understanding of ecosystems and the importance of their conservation. The location also allows a visit to be combined with a walk through Maribor City Park, one of the city's main green spaces.
