The Saint Martin Route is an international cultural and pilgrimage trail linking places associated with the life and legacy of Saint Martin of Tours. Stretching approximately 2,500 kilometres, it runs from Szombathely in Hungary, where the saint was born, towards Tours in France, where he is buried. In 2005, it became a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe.
Around 550 kilometres pass through Slovenia, connecting churches, chapels and settlements named after Saint Martin. The Slovenian section has 60 checkpoints where walkers can collect stamps in a pilgrimage passport. The route combines walking with religious history, sacred art and local traditions, passing through Maribor and its surroundings.
An important part of the area's Martin heritage is St Martin's Church in Kamnica, near Maribor. Dating back to the 11th century, the church features Baroque alterations, frescoes depicting scenes from the saint's life and altars by sculptor Jožef Holzinger. The route highlights historical connections across Europe and the cultural and religious heritage of northeastern Slovenia.
