In the wine-growing village of Vodole above Malečnik, just outside Maribor, Valentan Organic Tourist Farm is run by a family now in its third generation of winemaking. Organic farming extends beyond the vineyards to fields, vegetables and an orchard where traditional varieties of apples, cherries and plums are preserved. The family places particular emphasis on biodiversity and caring for the land.
The farm's wine tavern serves homemade platters with fresh bread, traditional cured meats, lard spread, seasonal vegetables and Slovenian cottage-cheese gibanica. Vegetarian and vegan dishes can also be arranged. Its organic wine selection includes Sauvignon, Welschriesling, Riesling and skin-contact orange wines. Farm products such as pumpkin seed oil, buckwheat groats, flour, apple juice and vinegar made from heritage apples are also available.
Wine tastings in the old cellar or vineyard pair the family's wines with local food and an introduction to organic production. Set at the end of a country lane among vineyards, meadows and woodland, the farm offers a rural setting close to the city.
