Maribor Art Gallery (UGM), in the city centre, presents Slovenian modern and contemporary art from the late 19th century to the present. Its collection holds more than 10,000 works, spanning painting, sculpture, prints, photography, video and new media. A particular focus is placed on artists from north-eastern Slovenia and their contribution to the country's art history.
Artists represented include Zoran Mušič, Zmago Jeraj, Slavko Tihec and Ida Brišnik Remec. The gallery also holds Slovenia's first dedicated collection of video art, developed since 1999. Its exhibitions connect 20th-century art with contemporary artistic practices, while changing presentations offer different perspectives on the collection.
The architecture is part of the experience. Exhibition spaces on Strossmayerjeva Street occupy a 19th-century townhouse and a former 18th-century convent church. The Great Hall and Column Hall provide a historic setting for the artworks. Founded in 1954, the gallery connects art with the history of its buildings and Maribor's cultural development.
