Lent is Maribor's oldest district, stretching along the left bank of the Drava River. Once a busy river port, it was a stopping point for timber rafts and traders transporting goods southwards. Today, narrow streets, remnants of the medieval city walls and historic buildings recall its trading past. The renewed riverfront connects this heritage with the river and the old town.
Lent's best-known landmark is the Old Vine, a Žametovka grapevine more than 450 years old that still produces grapes. Nearby stand the Water Tower, a 16th-century Renaissance fortification, the Judgement Tower and the former Jewish synagogue. The Minoriti Cultural Quarter, home to Maribor Puppet Theatre, is another important part of the district's cultural landscape.
Today, Lent is a centre of cultural and social life. Its riverside promenade, renovated in 2024, offers space mainly for walking and cycling, with cafés and restaurants nearby. Each summer, Festival Lent brings music, theatre and other performances to the district and venues across Maribor.
