A former marketplace framed by a Renaissance town hall, Baroque monument and historic buildings.

Maribor's Main Square (Glavni trg) is one of the city's historic gathering places, just a short walk from the Drava River and the Old Bridge. First recorded as Markt in 1315, it served as the main marketplace for centuries. Farmers and craftspeople traded their goods here, while prominent townhouses gradually shaped the square. Today, historic façades stand alongside cafés, shops and everyday city life.

Among its landmarks is the Town Hall (Rotovž), built in 1515 and later remodelled in Renaissance style. Its unusual feature is a Baroque tower positioned off-centre on the façade. The square is also home to the Plague Column, created by Baroque sculptor Jožef Štraub to commemorate the end of a devastating epidemic. The late-Baroque Church of St Aloysius stands nearby.

The square reflects different chapters of Maribor's development. Its buildings include a former town pharmacy, an old casino and historic merchants' houses. The eastern side changed considerably when the Old Bridge opened in 1913. Today, the square remains a gathering place and an important stop in Maribor's old town.
