Three performing arts, over a century of theatre history and the Maribor Theatre Festival.

The Slovene National Theatre Maribor (SNG Maribor) stands beside Slomšek Square in the historic city centre. Bringing together drama, opera and ballet, it presents a varied programme of Slovenian and international works. Professional Slovenian-language theatre began here in 1919 with a production of Tugomer. Today, the institution combines its long theatrical tradition with contemporary productions and international guest performances.

The Drama company stages classic and contemporary plays, while Opera and Ballet present musical theatre, from established operas to modern choreography. Maribor Ballet has gained international recognition through the work of choreographer Edward Clug. Another important figure is director Tomaž Pandur, who led the Drama company from 1989 to 1996.

The theatre is also closely associated with the Maribor Theatre Festival (Borštnikovo srečanje), Slovenia's central theatre festival, held annually in the city. Concerts and other cultural events complement its programme, making the theatre an important part of Maribor's cultural life.
