Meljski Hill rises on the northeastern edge of Maribor, above the Melje district, where the city meets the wine-growing hills of Slovenske gorice. Its defining feature is a steep marl cliff and scree slope, which may also explain the hill's name. Part of the area is protected as a nature reserve for its unusual geology and plants adapted to warm, dry slopes.
The hill is an important habitat for birds, especially birds of prey. According to the City of Maribor, 61 bird species breed here, while another 30 visit outside the breeding season or spend the winter in the area. Some of the breeding species are threatened. The mix of exposed slopes, trees and open ground provides a range of habitats.
There is also a long history of human settlement. Archaeological finds show activity here from prehistoric times through the Roman period. The Maribor Wine Road winds through the hill's vineyards, passing historic winegrowers' buildings. Meljski Hill brings together natural features, birdlife and the viticultural heritage of Maribor's eastern outskirts.
