Maribor, a green city
Welcome to Maribor – a truly green city
Maribor is a city where urban life blends seamlessly with its many parks, the Drava River, the forests of Pohorje and lush, vine-covered hills. Nature is always close by, inviting you to explore it on foot, by bike or by public transport.
It is no wonder that Maribor has been awarded the Slovenia Green Destination Gold certification and was also named Europe's Best Green Capital in 2025. The city is building its future on responsible tourism development, the preservation of natural and cultural heritage, and the promotion of sustainable everyday living in local communities.

Living in perfect harmony with nature
A diverse range of trees in the city park and green spaces filled with nectar-rich plants that support pollinators are a common sight in Maribor. The same goes for the numerous public drinking water fountains, which help reduce the use of plastic bottles throughout the city. You might even come across a community clean-up event organised by local residents.
While exploring the city, you can visit numerous restaurants and other culinary establishments that source their ingredients from local producers and prioritise seasonal produce. The wide variety of options makes it easy to enjoy a delicious culinary experience while helping to reduce the city's carbon footprint and support the local economy.
In recent years, the city has gained a revitalised, greener Lent riverfront and more electric buses. Efforts are also made to minimise the environmental impact of events through Zero Waste practices, including reusable cups and separate waste collection.
Sustainability in Maribor is more than just a promise – it is part of the city's landscape and everyday life. Come and be part of it!
Getting around the green way
The city centre is compact enough to explore easily on foot, but you can also:
use the MBajk bike-sharing system,
take a city bus,
call the Maister electric vehicle.
If you prefer not to hike up Pohorje, you can also reach the Bellevue station by taking the Pohorje cable car.
Maribor is continuously improving its public transport infrastructure through the electrification of its bus fleet, the expansion of the MBajk bike-sharing system and the development of cycling infrastructure in general. Choose a sustainable way to explore Maribor and its surroundings, discovering the city's attractions and natural beauty at your own pace. Even small choices can contribute to a greener city and a more pleasant environment for everyone.
