Classical: Marimba

2st concert of the Youth Cycle 2026/2027

Nežka Prosenjak, marimba

Commented concert

Nežka Prosenjak is an established Slovenian percussionist, focusing primarily on the marimba. She lives and works in Switzerland, where she performs as a soloist, orchestral musician and member of various ensembles. She began her career at the Ravne na Koroškem Music School, continued at the Maribor Conservatory of Music and Ballet, and then studied at the universities of Graz and Bern, where she specialized in contemporary and solo playing. She is the recipient of numerous international awards. Her repertoire ranges from interpretations of classical works, such as Bach's Well-Tuned Piano, to demanding contemporary compositions for solo marimba.

For the Youth Cycle, the musician prepared a lesson on the expressiveness of the marimba, with an emphasis on classical music. The marimba is a melodic percussion instrument of African origin, which resembles a large xylophone in appearance. It is made of tuned wooden plates, under which are vertical metal tubes (resonators), which amplify and prolong the sound. It has a characteristic warm, soft and deep tone, which is much darker than the sharp sound of the xylophone. The plates are most often made of Honduran rosewood or the cheaper padouk wood. It is played with percussion sticks (sticks), which are usually wrapped in wool or cotton. Professional musicians (marimbists) often use two percussion sticks in each hand, which allows them to play chords. Thus, in the hands of an exceptional soloist, the marimba can transform into a fascinating virtuoso musical instrument!
