Johann Sebastian Bach: St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244

The magnificent music of Johann Sebastian Bach, which is still considered by many to be a model of perfection in musical composition, is almost impossible to imagine without its place in the important holidays of the church year. It is precisely these that prompted the decision to present one of the composer's most impressive works in our cycle this time.

There is no shortage of musicians in Slovenia who understand and perform Bach's music at the highest level. This prompted us to mix things up a bit when planning our concert season and decide to offer our Chamber Series subscribers something special this time: we will host a nearly hundred-member ensemble on stage. We will only hear them by name. Megaron Chamber Choir in conjunction with a carefully selected international ensemble of instrumentalists of the same name baroque orchestra and soloists. The choir, led by its founder, composer and conductor Damijan Mocnik, has developed into a top performing ensemble in two decades of operation, successfully performing at home and abroad and is the current winner of the international choir competition Our Song in Maribor. It is distinguished by its recognizable luxurious sound and the ability to excitingly interpret compositions from different stylistic periods. For the performance Matthew Passion The leadership of the combined ensembles – choir and baroque orchestra – will be taken over by an internationally renowned American lead Gary Graden, which operates in Sweden.

Of the two famous Bach Passions, The Passion According to Matthew more introspective and focused on human vulnerability, which is why it appeals so strongly to modern audiences. Bach impressed upon it the emotional tension and sense of uncertainty in times of great crises – experiences that we are still familiar with today. Musicologist Alex Ross has subtly reflected that Bach opens up a way for us – and perhaps for himself – to deal with extreme emotional states, sympathizing with us without consoling us.
