Celebration of the Oldest Grapevine Harvest
Our Old Vine, the oldest vine in the world, the queen of all vines, is the subject of numerous tourist and protocol events as one of the most significant ethnographic landmarks. The most famous and popular of these is undoubtedly its ceremonial harvest.
The ceremonial process of harvesting the Oldest Grapevine
Maribor, the capital of Styria, is renowned for its rich winemaking tradition. In the heart of the city, you can find the Oldest Grapevine, a 450-year-old grapevine that is the oldest in the world. Every October, a grand harvest festival is held in its honor, becoming a true Maribor celebration.
The harvest of the Oldest Grapevine is always an occasion to celebrate wine and tradition. The event attracts numerous visitors from all over Slovenia and abroad who come to witness this unique event.
The harvest begins with the tasting of the first grape, performed by the Mayor of Maribor. If the grapes are ripe, the official harvest begins. Grape pickers from "Šomper" near Maribor harvest the grapes, which are then weighed, measured for sugar content, and processed into wine.
At the end of the harvest, a symbolic meeting of the "last bunch of grapes and the first basket of manure" takes place at the Oldest Grapevine. This tradition shows respect for the vine and the land.
In addition to the harvest, the event offers a rich cultural and entertainment program. Visitors can enjoy music, dance, and culinary delights.
