Piramida hill - the Roots of Maribor
We like to say Maribor is the city below Pohorje hill, when in fact it should be called the city beneath the Piramida hill, as the city's history began on this 386 m high hill.
In the first half of the 12th century, a castle was built on this small hill as the centre of the Podravska Marka (Marchburch, border castle), after which the settlement below was later named. It is safe to say that without this castle, the city as we know it today would not exist and would definitely not be called Maribor.
We will walk through the castle's history and archaeological excavations that gave us the outlines of this once mighty structure at the top of the hill and where the roots of the city of Maribor lie.
