Bart Lunenburg, Window Closing, Threads Spinning, Chair Falling
Bart Lunenburg explores Maribor’s textile heritage and its impact on the city’s architecture and collective memory. Connecting textile production with Plečnik’s work, he examines labour, gender and industrial history through research and art.
Bart Lunenburg’s first solo exhibition in Maribor explores the city’s textile heritage as a key part of its architectural, social and cultural fabric.
Building on his ongoing research into the work of architect Jože Plečnik, Lunenburg connects Plečnik’s references to textiles, patterns and weaving with Maribor’s history as a major centre of textile production. Through archival research, site-specific observation and material experimentation, he examines how labour, gendered production and industrial memory are embedded in architecture and urban space.
Treating the city as a “garment”, the artist considers how the textile industry has shaped Maribor’s urban form and collective memory. Lunenburg’s multidisciplinary practice explores architecture as a carrier of memory and lived experience, translating research and observation into sculptures, photographs, drawings, textiles and installations.
